Description
This striking astro photograph of the Moon captures its rarely-seen colours, enhancing the natural beauty and scientific detail of our closest celestial neighbour. While the Moon often appears colourless to the naked eye, specialized photographic techniques reveal subtle colour variations on its surface. These colours result from differing mineral compositions, with orange hues indicating areas rich in iron oxides, and blue regions pointing to titanium oxides.
Captured with a 1.5-meter focal length telescope at the Hawthorne Deep Sky Observatory in Brisbane, this image was taken using a dedicated monochrome-cooled camera fitted with red, green, and blue filters. The photograph was assembled by recording thousands of frames per filter, selecting the highest quality 10% of frames, and combining them. By amplifying colour channel differences, we can observe these subtle surface compositions with clarity and depth.
The Moon itself formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago, likely from debris resulting from a massive collision between Earth and a Mars-sized body. Today, it influences our tides, stabilizes Earth’s tilt, and shapes the rhythms of life on our planet.
This photograph, presented as a painting for a home or office, serves both as an impressive decorative piece and a thought-provoking educational tool, inspiring curiosity about the Moon’s formation, composition, and impact on Earth.
