🌌 Capturing the Trifid Nebula (M20) in Natural Colour – A Cosmic Showpiece

🔭 A Nebula with Triple Personality

The Trifid Nebula lies approximately 5,200 light-years from Earth and showcases an extraordinary combination of:

• Red emission nebula powered by ionised hydrogen (Hα),
• Blue reflection nebula caused by starlight scattering off dust,
• Dark nebula — cold clouds of interstellar dust that divide the nebula into three distinct lobes.

This visually stunning contrast gives the Trifid its name and its place as a favourite in Milky Way astrophotography.

🧪 Technical Data – Captured Under Urban Skies

This Trifid Nebula image was captured from Brisbane’s Bortle 7 skies — a challenging environment for deep-sky work. To highlight the natural spectrum of the nebula while preserving subtle structural detail, I combined Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) filters with Hydrogen Alpha (Ha).

• Telescope: EDGHD 8″ with Focal Reducer
• Camera: ZWO ASI2600MM Pro
• Filters:
  • Ha – 15 x 300s
  • R/G/B – 15 x 300s each for nebula
  • RGB – 15 x 6s each for star layer
• Mount: ZWO AM5
• Processing Tools: Astro Pixel Processor (APP), PixInsight (PI), and Adobe Photoshop (PS)
• Location: Brisbane, Australia (urban light pollution)

The image stacking process involved hundreds of individual frames to reduce noise, enhance signal, and retain fidelity to the nebula’s authentic colour. The final result is a clean and balanced composition that honours both science and visual art.
