Description

Art Deco of the Full Moon

This striking astrophotograph of the 100% illuminated Strawberry Full Moon—captured on June 11, 2025—combines scientific precision with visual elegance, revealing the Moon as you’ve rarely seen it. Presented in a rich Art Deco aesthetic, this image transforms our familiar celestial neighbour into a cosmic canvas of colour and form.

Captured with a 1.5-meter focal length telescope at the Hawthorne Deep Sky Observatory in Brisbane, this image was created using a monochrome-cooled camera and RGB filters. Thousands of frames were taken per colour channel, with only the finest 10% selected for the final composition. This meticulous process enhances the Moon’s subtle natural colours, normally invisible to the human eye.

  • Blue tones highlight areas rich in titanium oxides

  • Orange and brown hues indicate regions high in iron oxides

  • Fine crater rays and lines—etched by asteroid impacts over billions of years—radiate across the surface like brushstrokes of ancient cosmic artistry

The result is a visually dramatic yet scientifically accurate representation of the Moon’s mineral diversity, surface history, and enduring celestial influence. The Moon, born from a colossal impact 4.5 billion years ago, continues to stabilise Earth’s tilt and drive ocean tides, making it as vital as it is beautiful.
